So you want to go to Puerto Escondido?
I’ll tell you why it may sound like a small place or that it’s not very touristic but that’s actually a good thing. Puerto Escondido is not as commercialized as Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. It has a small-town feeling in a state of Oaxaca.
Unlike other parts of Mexico, this beach town has several beaches, sports fishing, whale watching, turtle releasing events and surfing. There are plenty of surfers and hipsters but it’s not a crowded place. It’s not a place for staying too long with very hot weather and slow internet speeds. Salinas hostel and cafe is a place which I found them to have the fastest internet.
There are day time activities you can do such as hiking boulders on the coast, tours to ride horses, see whales, turtles, dolphins and even the bioluminescence. Scooter and ATVs are available for rent per day if you want to venture out further.
The boat tour is a good deal because it cheaper than a boat tour in Cancun, it’s less crowded and it has a greater chance of swimming more marine life. Seafood is cheap here especially oysters which cost me 5 USD for 12 oysters, but the price is probably higher now.
During then for the nighttime you can swim in a pitch-dark lake and look at bioluminescence light up on your body or party at Congo bar Wednesday night. During the weekends, go pre-game at chic and Beach Club for cheap drinks. Afterwards, go to the more crowded Beach Club next door.
